On September 27, 2012, the Sixth Annual Jaki ed Auction and Exhibition was held at the Marshall Islands Resort’s Melele Room. Several embassy staff, including Ambassador Armbruster and Department of Interior representative Al Fowler, took part in the exciting auction. Jaki ed are finely woven mats that Marshallese traditionally used as clothing. This year, in large part thanks to the University of the South Pacific’s successful novice weaving program, a record fifty-six jaki ed went up for auction. In addition to the auction, a number of historic Marshallese mats were flown in from Hawaii’s Bishop Museum for display. The Jaki ed Auction and Exhibition were put on as part of Manit Week, celebrating the Marshall Islands’ traditional culture and crafts.
