Compact Funding Payments for January 2015 over $8.8 million

In the month of January, the RMI Ministry of Finance received Compact-funded payments from the United States Government totaling $8,868,607.  These payments were for Compact Sector Grants for the month of January, the 2nd Quarter Kwajalein Landowner Payment, the FY 2014 SEG, the Enewetak Food & Agriculture Program, and a Technical Assistance Grant for the Auditor General’s Office.  The breakdown of these payments is as follows:

  • January RMI Education Sector Grant and CMI, $1,111,000
  • January RMI Health Sector Grant, $611,000
  • January Kwajalein Environmental Impact Grant, $20,000
  • January Ebeye Special Needs Education Grant, $210,000

The United States Government, through its Embassy in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, supports programs to continue the strong ties between our countries and to increase the standard of living for all our people.  The Compact of Free Association, as amended, offers Marshallese citizens open access to the United States, and is the basis for relations between our countries.  Under the Compact, the United States gives approximately 60% of the RMI’s annual appropriation focused on democratic goals such as health, education, and infrastructure.

Compact Funding Payments for February – April 2015 almost $10.5 million

In the months of February, March, and April, the RMI Ministry of Finance received Compact-funded payments from the United States Government totaling $10,496,087.00.  These payments were for Compact Sector Grants for the months of February, March, and April, the 3rd Quarter Kwajalein Landowner Payment, the Enewetak Food & Agriculture Program, FY 2014 SEG, and FY 2013 SEG.  The breakdown of these payments is as follows:

Interior Releases $1.9 Million in Compact Funding Payments to the Republic of the Marshall Islands for June 2015  

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs this week released to the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands’ (RMI) Ministry of Finance U.S. Compact grant payments totaling $1,961,000.  These payments included Compact Sector Grants for the month of June and grants under the Enewetak Food & Agriculture Program. The breakdown of these payments is as follows:

Compact grants provided by the United States to the Republic of the Marshall Islands are pre-determined through the bilateral Joint Economic Management Finance and Accountability Committee (JEMFAC) meetings between the United States Government and the Marshall Islands government as established under the Compact of Free Association.  The Compact provides approximately 60% of the RMI’s annual budget for health, education, and infrastructure development and maintenance.  The close relationship between the U.S. Government and the Republic of the Marshall Islands is enshrined in the Compact of Free Association, under which the United States also provides guaranteed financial assistance over a 20-year period in exchange for full international defense authority and responsibilities.  

The Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas carries out the administrative responsibilities of the Secretary of the Interior in coordinating federal policy for the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and administering and overseeing U.S. federal assistance to the Freely Associated States of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau under the Compacts of Free Association. The Assistant Secretary executes these responsibilities through the Office of Insular Affairs.

Republic of the Marshall Islands Receives $8.9 Million in Compact Funding Payments for October 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 10, 2015

U.S. Support to RMI Continues under Compact for FY 2016 

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs recently released to the Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands’ (RMI) Ministry of Finance, U.S. Compact grant payments for October totaling $8,986,600.  The breakdown of these payments is as follows:

Kwajalein Impact & Use Payment 1st Quarter            $ 8,616,600.00

Enewetak Food & Agriculture Program                       $    370,000.00

As provided for under Section 212 of the Compact of Free Association with the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the United States provides payments for military use and operating rights on Kwajelein Island and Atoll. Also under the Enewetak Food & Agriculture program, the U.S. continues to assist a community affected by the U.S. nuclear testing program of the 1940s by providing supplemental food for the people of Enewetak, replanting vegetation on the inhabited islands, conducting agricultural maintenance training and transporting food supplies.
