A multi-agency team led by Len Austin, deputy director of Golden West Humanitarian Foundation, surveyed Mili and Maloelap Atolls to prepare for the safe disposal of unexploded ordnance (UXO). The expedition identified unexploded ordnance that will be removed to safeguard the residents in the most inhabited areas of those atolls. Sponsored by the U.S. Embassy, the project seeks to enhance public awareness and train officials on techniques for field-based unexploded ordnance disposal. Local officials and residents assisted the team by identifying surface, buried, and deep water UXO. The expedition also included members from the RMI Historic Preservation Office, RMI Environmental Protection Authority, and the US Embassy Science Fellow, Michael Donovan.
