On February 14, 2013 Ambassador Armbruster attended the opening ceremony for Majuro Day celebrations. Performers rendered the national anthem in sign language and Marshall Islands President Christopher Loeak was the keynote speaker as the Majuro Day holiday kicked off. There was dancing (in the rain), good food, and sports to celebrate the commemoration of the American liberation of Majuro Atoll from the Japanese during World II. This year’s Majuro Day celebration has included a month-long basketball and softball tournament, as well as traditional games, canoe racing, and track and field events during this past week. The rain during the Opening Ceremony was much needed in Majuro and even welcome as it drenched the dignitaries in the stands!
