RMI Students Participate in Lively Debates

Education Week is underway in the Marshall Islands!  Five debate teams took on the important question of whether poverty alleviation should take precedence over environmental stewardship.  It was a hard fought debate with students noting the need for a clean environment to attract tourists and create jobs and to have a sustainable future based on the abundant marine resources.  Meanwhile, the reality of children not having enough to eat was a powerful example of the need to reduce poverty.  In the end, the judges point system resulted in a tie between the Co-op School and Baptist School.  The Minister of Education, Hilda Heine and Ambassador Armbruster awarded the trophies and enjoyed the debates!
