Fish for dinner! On Friday, July 26th, Department of the Interior, Office of Insular Affairs officially awarded to the Rongelap Atoll Local Government $150,000 in grant funding through the FY 2013 OIA Technical Assistance Program to support Rongelap’s Community Based Fish Feed Mill Project. This is a unique project and utilizes the natural advantages of the Marshall Islands to create a sustainable business venture that will generate income and revenue for the Rongelapese community for many years into the future. Working alongside the Oceanic Institute of Hawaii, the Land Grant Program of the College of the Marshall Islands, and private sector participants based in Hawaii, the Rongelap Atoll Local Government has pioneered the domestication of Moi fish for export to Hawaii and the US mainland. The grant includes an additional $60,000 to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment. The total amount of the grant award is $210,000. Essential to the success of this venture is a steady supply of inexpensive feed for the Moi fish. Providing a feed supply is critical to this potentially self-sustaining venture, which is capable of providing critically needed employment and income for the people of Rongelap Atoll. And the Moi taste great!
