Ambassador Armbruster and Political/Economic officer Andrew Zvirzdin met with Base Manager Jin Liang and toured the Marshall Islands Fishing Venture (MIFV) tuna processing plant on November 28. With a fleet of approximately 40 long-line fishing vessels, MIFV exports several tons of fresh and frozen yellow fin tuna to the United States every month. The processing facility is inspected biannually by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and MIFV utilizes a state-of-the-art traceability system which can track every fish from the ocean to dinner plate. Mr. Liang noted that approximately half of his 400 employees are non-Marshallese due to the difficulty of retaining well qualified and trained Marshallese workers.
